Actress Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa has opened up in court about the early days of her relationship with internationally acclaimed DJ Black Coffee, offering rare insight into how their romance started and later fell apart.

According to a judgment delivered by Judge Mongezi Ntanga at the Johannesburg High Court, the Isibaya star revealed that she met the DJ while filming the SABC1 drama Tshisa, where Black Coffee appeared as a guest.

Their connection grew when they crossed paths again during another production, Young, Gifted and Black.

In her testimony, Enhle said Black Coffee reached out to her on Facebook, where he persistently asked her out.

Eventually, she agreed.

“Due to the defendant’s persistence over time, she finally gave in and agreed to go out on a date with the defendant for coffee or dinner,” the court papers read.

On the night of their first outing, Black Coffee told her that before their date, he had two gigs lined up, one in Wattville on the East Rand and another in Rosebank, Johannesburg.

They attended both events before grabbing food from a convenience store since restaurants were already closed.

The two then went back to his home, where they spent hours talking.

“They decided to get something to eat from a convenience store and went to the defendant’s house, where they had a great conversation, and they might have spoken until the early hours of the morning,” the judgment noted.

“When she wanted to leave that evening and go home, the defendant talked her out of it. They spent the night together and had a conversation until the sun rose; from that day on, they became inseparable.”

Their relationship soon deepened, and Enhle eventually became pregnant. She admitted to feeling anxious about having a baby out of wedlock, but Black Coffee assured her that he had a plan for their future.

“She started crying, and the defendant comforted and assured her that she had nothing to worry about, as there was a plan for their future,” Judge Ntanga recorded.

The court heard that Enhle’s uncles initially disapproved of the union, but she persuaded them to accept it, describing Black Coffee as a successful man who could provide for her.

He later paid lobola amounting to R70 000.

However, what began as a fairy tale gradually deteriorated. Enhle claimed that her acting career suffered because her husband disapproved of her romantic scenes on set.

“The defendant was no longer comfortable with her taking kissing scenes,” the judgment quoted.

“She testified that the majority of the time, she was not working. In order to keep peace in the household, she looked after the house, packed the defendant’s clothes, fed him, and massaged the defendant’s injured hand.”

The revelations came out as the pair battled in court over the division of their estate.

Enhle, who shares two children with Black Coffee, had also applied for R500 000 in maintenance, arguing that they were married in community of property since lobola had been paid.

Black Coffee, however, disputed this claim, maintaining that their marriage was not in community of property and opposed the equal division of assets.
