Former Cameroon international defender and head coach, Rigobert Song, has been appointed as the new manager of the Central African Republic (CAR) senior national team.
The announcement was made official on Monday night through a decree issued by the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Civic Education.
The 48-year-old, who was dismissed as Cameroon coach in February 2024 after the Indomitable Lions’ round-of-16 exit at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), steps into his first coaching role outside his home country.
Song’s appointment comes at a crucial time for the Central African Republic (CAR), a team grappling with a disappointing run in AFCON 2025 qualifiers and currently sitting fourth in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying group.
Despite these challenges, his arrival has been met with optimism and fanfare, highlighted by his meeting with President Faustin Archange Touadera and the Sports Minister upon arrival in Bangui.
To support him in this endeavor, Song will be assisted by a team of experienced personnel, including Éloge Enza-Yamissi, Sébastien Ngato, and Éric Cabalero.
Ngato, who has been serving as interim coach, previously led CAR’s B’ team to their historic qualification for the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Song’s tenure as Cameroon’s head coach saw a mixed record. Over 26 matches, his team managed only six wins, eight draws, and nine losses.
The 2023 AFCON campaign proved disappointing as Cameroon exited in the round of 16, falling to Nigeria, prompting the Cameroonian Football Federation to part ways with the former national icon.
Before taking charge of the senior national team, Song served as head coach for Cameroon’s A’ team and U23 squad, showcasing his ability to work with local players and develop emerging talent.
His new role with CAR represents an opportunity to revive his coaching career and make an impact on the international stage.
Although the Central African Republic will not feature in the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF AFCON 2025 in Morocco, there is renewed hope that Song can lay the foundation for future success.
His first test will involve building a competitive team capable of making progress in the ongoing World Cup qualifiers.
Song’s appointment has already sparked excitement among fans and stakeholders in the Central African Republic as the former Indomitable Lions captain brings the experience and stature needed to elevate CAR football.
For Song, this is a chance to redeem himself after his turbulent exit from Cameroon and prove his credentials in a high-stakes environment.
