Lebowakgomo, Limpopo – Police in Lebowakgomo are investigating a shocking incident of violence at a school in Seleteng, where a female pupil allegedly poured boiling water over a male classmate during an exam preparation camp. The alleged assault, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, has left the male pupil with serious burn injuries and sparked outrage from law enforcement officials.
According to preliminary police reports, the 19-year-old male victim was asleep in one of the classrooms when the 18-year-old female pupil approached him. She accused him of touching her private parts while he was sleeping.
Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba explained: "The complainant reportedly denied the allegations, and the suspect initially left but later returned and poured boiling water on him."
The victim sustained significant burn injuries as a result of the alleged attack and was immediately transported to a local hospital for urgent medical treatment. His current condition remains under close observation by medical professionals.
At this stage, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident. Colonel Ledwaba confirmed that investigations are ongoing as police work to establish the full sequence of events and gather evidence to support a potential prosecution. The police have opened a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The alleged assault has drawn strong condemnation from senior police officials in Limpopo. Acting Limpopo police commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers expressed his dismay at the incident and vowed to ensure a thorough investigation to bring those responsible to justice.
Major General Scheepers stated: "We take incidents of violence, especially among learners, very seriously. Such acts have no place in our learning institutions and must be dealt with decisively. The investigation must uncover the full circumstances surrounding this incident so that justice is served."
The incident has raised serious questions about safety and security within schools in the Limpopo province, particularly during exam preparation camps where pupils often reside on school premises. Concerns have been voiced regarding the level of supervision and support provided to pupils during these periods, and whether adequate measures are in place to prevent and address conflicts.
The investigation will need to determine how the female pupil managed to obtain boiling water and carry out the alleged attack without being detected. It will also be crucial to establish the veracity of the initial accusation made against the male pupil and whether any prior incidents or tensions existed between the two individuals.
The police are appealing to anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist with their inquiries. They are urging witnesses to provide statements and any relevant details that may shed light on the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault.
The incident has undoubtedly caused considerable distress and anxiety among pupils, parents, and staff at the school. School officials are expected to provide counselling and support services to those affected by the violence, and to work closely with the police to ensure a safe and secure learning environment.
The outcome of the police investigation will be closely watched by the community, who are demanding swift and decisive action to address the alleged assault and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The case highlights the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to tackle violence in schools and promote a culture of respect, tolerance, and peaceful conflict resolution.
