In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through the Nigerian community in South Africa, Anthony Chikezie Mbonu, a 43-year-old Nigerian citizen living in Durban, was fatally shot on Sunday, February 23, 2025. The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) released a statement on February 27, 2025, confirming the tragic event and calling for swift action from local authorities.

Mr Mbonu, born on February 19, 1982, was reportedly sitting in his car when he was attacked by two unidentified assailants. The motive behind this heinous act remains unknown, adding to the distress of his family and the wider Nigerian community in South Africa.

The victim’s wife, who is eight months pregnant, received the devastating news while at home. She now faces the unimaginable task of raising their two children and an unborn child without their father. The family’s grief is compounded by the complexities of claiming Mr. Mbonu’s remains from the mortuary at Addington Hospital in Durban, a process made more challenging due to his expired passport.

NUSA has stepped forward to support the bereaved family during this difficult time. Akindele Olunloyo, the National Publicity Secretary of NUSA, stated, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Anthony Chikezie Mbonu, a member of our community. NUSA is committed to supporting Mr Mbonu’s family and will provide updates on the case as they become available.”

The organization is working closely with local authorities to ensure a thorough investigation is conducted. They have called upon the South African Police Service (SAPS) to “leave no stone unturned” in their efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

This tragic event has once again heightened concerns about the safety of Nigerians in South Africa. In response, NUSA has issued a set of guidelines for the Nigerian community in South Africa:

1. Exercise extreme caution in daily activities
2. Remain vigilant and aware of surroundings at all times
3. Report any suspicious activities to local authorities immediately
4. Remain law-abiding at all times
5. Support one another during this difficult period

As the investigation continues, NUSA has pledged to continue advocating for the rights and safety of Nigerians living in South Africa while also working to foster better relationships between Nigerians and local communities.

The loss of Anthony Chikezie Mbonu is not just a tragedy for his family but for the entire Nigerian community in South Africa. As his pregnant wife and two children grapple with this immense loss, the community has rallied around them, offering support and calling for justice.

NUSA urges anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist the authorities in their investigation. For further information or inquiries, the public is encouraged to contact the SAPS or NUSA at info@nigerianunion.org.za.

As this story continues to unfold, it serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of community solidarity in the face of tragedy. The Nigerian community in South Africa, while mourning one of their own, remains resilient and united in their call for justice and improved safety for all.
